Journals need a durable method for correcting the scholarly record while preserving transparency.
Corrections
Link a correction notice to the article and back again. State what changed and why without silently overwriting the history.
Retractions
Keep the record accessible and clearly marked, linked to a reasoned notice unless legal or safety constraints require limited removal.
Expressions of concern
Use a temporary notice when credible risk exists during an unresolved investigation, then update it when the case concludes.
Version control
Record dates and substantive changes. Preserve identifiers rather than replacing files without notice.
Due process
Follow a documented investigation, contact relevant authors, consider institutional findings and manage conflicts.
Metadata updates
Update DOI records, landing pages, XML feeds, OAI-PMH records and relevant directory notifications.
Policy first
Publish and test the workflow before a case occurs. GAI reviews the clarity of post-publication policies.
Next step: improve your public documentation, then review the GAI application process. Inclusion is not guaranteed.
